Semester Saturday on March 23, 2019

I found semester Saturday was about using the influence to change policy. Influence requires personal and professional change. Dr. Suzanne Miyamoto explained the concept of leadership as a personal journey of slow and steady progress. Nurses have major impact in health policy change, however must adapt to changing political climates. I enjoyed the difference between BMW (the negative part of influencing) and ACT ( the positive part of influencing). Essential II, Essential V

Influence under pressure is what I consider when presenting to my stakeholders. Dr. Cranmer presented the "hook" for a presentation. A presentation is about the beginning, getting them, (audience) hooked or positively influencing the audience that they need the information. My powerpoint slides were presented to my peers for critique. I learned to present smaller information and speak more, therefore bring the attention back to me because I am the influencer. Dr. Cranmer explained that influence requires less information on the slide and more verbal discussion. The use of sticky notes to design a slide, only placing information on the slide that fits on a sticky note. I have control over what I present, more verbal influence less passive slide reading. USE STICKY NOTES! Essential II

Dr. Mary Gullatte has had an amazing leadership journey. I liked her story about her first day as a charge nurse on a bone marrow transplant unit. That story made me realize she was born a leader and influencer in the nursing profession. She explained that in order to influence people, one must define their value. "Articulate your value," Dr. Gullatte stated. Make impact with meaning and purpose. Essential II, Essential V, Essential VI
